Welcome to the Creighton University Department of Anesthesiology's Web page. The purpose of this site is to provide ready access to information about our Department and its activities.

I am very excited to return "home" as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Creighton University where I was a medical student from 1984 to 1988. I am committed to helping the Department become: 1) a superb teaching Department in our affiliation with the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Anesthesiology Residency program as well as undergraduate medical education for Creighton's medical students; 2) a high quality perioperative medicine service efficiently managed in a patient, faculty, and employee friendly manner; and 3) a significant contributor to the academic mission of Creighton University Medical Center.

These three goals are within reach because of the strengths, interests, and commitment of the current faculty, the resources of the medical center, and the superb leadership of both the medical center and Creighton University. To assist in achieving these goals I see the following as important strategic initiatives over the next several years: 1) the development of a state-of-the-art anesthesia preoperative evaluation center; 2) creation of a critical care medicine service and expansion of our acute/chronic pain medicine services; 3) implementation of an automated anesthesia record keeping system as a tool to manage the care of surgical patients as well as the introduction of a resource and patient flow management system (Navicare) into the operating room to help increase efficiency and improve patient/surgeon satisfaction; 4) introduction of computerized learning as well as the anesthesia simulator to the medical student and resident curricula; 5) the creation of a patient safety program that encourages a "culture of safety" that can be used as a model for other departments; and 6) scholarly activity in clinical pain research and creation of collaborative research projects with basic science departments such as pharmacology.
