On behalf of everyone at the Phi Chi house, we
congratulate you on your recent acceptance to Creighton University School of
Medicine. Since many of you are probably unfamiliar with Omaha, one of
your first concerns will be finding housing.
Phi Chi Medical Fraternity is a co-ed fraternity that
includes students in all four years of medical school. If you are hesitant about
living in a "Frat house", we would like to assure you that we are not
a typical "Fraternity" in the Animal House image. We are more of
a co-op, where the mission of the house is to encourage students to excel in
their studies, friendships, and recreation. You will make friends with other
first year students as well as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students who either live
in the house or attend the house social functions. Still not convinced? Here are
some of the other benefits of living in the Phi Chi house:
- Opportunity to live in a huge turn-of-the-century
mansion (house pictures), perfect for our
all-school Halloween party..
- Each room is a single and comes with a closet, bed,
desk, chair, and what ever you want to bring. Bathroom sharing is
minimum (we have 8 bathrooms for a maximum of 13 people). Cable T.V.
and wireless (all students must provide their own wireless receiver) DSL
internet
is available in every room, no extra fee.
- The house includes a dining room, a large
entertainment room with a fireplace, couches and cable TV, a library (with
required books for class), a sun-room, a laundry room, outdoor sand volleyball
court, a pool table, and dance floor/party basement.
- The kitchen comes with pots & pans,
plates, utensils, coffee maker, etc. so you do not need bring or buy your
own stuff.
- Cooking is on a rotational basis. It works out
so that you'll only cook one time every two weeks. This is a great
time-saving system, and applies to dinner on Sunday - Thursday. For
breakfast, lunch, and weekends, you are on your own, but staples for these
meals are bought weekly by the house, also on a rotational basis (meaning
that you will only have to go shopping, with one other person, once every
month and a half or so).
- Rent (merely $325/month) includes food, utilities, laundry fees, and more. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better
deal anywhere on your own.
- The house provides a relaxed social outlet after
long days of class and studying. It's nice to come home to a
house-full of friends, chill out on the living room couches, and have
someone cook dinner for you while you slip away into a deep, contented
sleep....
- ...But more realistically, when you need to study,
there are no problems with noisy neighbors: this is a house of medical
students, and everyone is going through the same thing.
- Social functions! The house usually hosts one
all-school social function each semester (see pictures) and does a house-activity about once a
month. Social functions are totally awesome, but not mandatory.
- Phi Chi is a mere 2 miles from the medical school,
which is important during winter and ideal for late risers, people without
cars, and anyone who hates wasting time commuting. We are also within
walking distance of the UNMC library and bookstore. We have our own
parking lot so you don't have to worry about parking your car on the street.
If you would like to get the most out of your first
year of medical school, please consider living at Phi Chi. Make reservations by
sending an advanced deposit of $425, which will cover your first month's rent
and initiation fee. Please contact a
recruiter
for more details before sending your check. Also, before sending your
check, make sure that you agree with and are willing to sign
the
housing agreement. It basically lays out the responsibilities of a Phi Chi
member. You must send in a signed copy of this document with your check in
order to make a reservation. Reservations will be accepted on a first come first served
basis.
