Laparoscopic Esophageal Heller Myotomy

Achalasia is a swallowing disorder - usually found in middle aged patients - that increases pressure at the lower esophagus. To correct achalasia, a LAPAROSCOPIC ESOPHAGEAL HELLER MYOTOMY is performed that disrupts the muscular fibers of the lower esophagus and allows the food to get to the stomach without delay. An antireflux procedure (partial fundoplication) is performed to avoid postoperative gastroesophageal reflux. Dr. Filipi has performed over 50 Heller Myotomies.

For this procedure, obtaining previous records is necessary. Out-of-town patients can receive assistance finding overnight accommodations, including reservations at the Red Lion Hotel or the Holiday Inn Express (adjacent to the medical center). HMO patients will need to obtain any needed referrals from their primary care physician prior to visiting the Esophageal Laboratory.
