The CUSOM - WIMS Program was
developed by a group of women faculty members
within the School of
Medicine to provide all women faculty with the tools and opportunity to
succeed in academic medicine,
as a venue for communication and
discussion about topics relevant to the careers and lifestyles of women
in medicine and the sciences. It has grown from a handful of
individuals, to a well organized group, that invites you to participate
in its programs. The Program also addresses issues faced by Women
Medical and Graduate Students and Residents.
The
organization will help women at all levels to understand the CUSOM rules
and system and will foster mentoring, advice for career advancement and
networking (local and national). Our goal is to be proactive and
constructive in advancing the careers of women faculty, residents and
students. Our REAL goal, is to become obsolete…. When we no
longer need WIMS groups, it will be a sign that women in medicine will
have achieved truly equal standing, with equal opportunities for career
advancement and leadership positions in medicine.
The
CUSOM-WIMS organization maintains contacts with national groups such as
the AAMC’s WIMS and the Society for Executive Leadership in Academic
Medicine. Our programs are intentionally flexible, geared to meet
the changing needs of women in academic medicine. Our activities include
small group consultations and discussions centered around specific
issues or problems, monthly lunchtime facilitated discussions on topics
of general interest, and 1-2 yearly conferences with invited speakers.
In addition, we invite all faculty, residents and students to join for
occasional informal gatherings, intended to allow women at CUSOM to get
to know each other and for networking, unwinding, sharing thoughts,
ideas, problems.
We have
a small but growing
library of books, videotapes, audio tapes and article reprints on
topics relating to women in medicine and science. They are kept in the
Medical Dean's Suite, and are available for all to use.
Many
of our activities are intended to benefit all faculty, regardless of
gender. We encourage the participation of our male colleagues as well.
Suggestions and ideas are always welcome. |
CUSOM WLO for
AAMC’s WIM"… this really is
not just alphabet soup, it actually means something. The Association of
American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has a WIM section, with multiple
projects and goals. The overriding theme is to promote gender equality,
increase the numbers of women in leadership positions in academic
medicine and encourage women’s career development. Each Medical School
and Teaching Hospital is encouraged to appoint one to three Women’s
Liaison Officer(s) (you got it: WLO) to the AAMC. This provides a contact
to whom the AAMC can communicate programs, issues, statistics etc.
The
WLO is usually an individual with an administrative role in her medical
school, often in charge of the local WIM program, and is appointed by
the Dean. The WLO receives surveys to complete (or try to punt to the
Dean’s office for completion…) to regularly update the central database
at AAMC: For example there is an annual national update on the numbers
of women on the faculty and in administration, their ranks, ratios of
men : women etc. A form is filled out and sent to the AAMC so that the
data on each SOM can be included in the annual report. They then send to
the WLO a powerpoint presentation that shows the national data, with
space to include CUSOM's information as a comparison. The WLO is also
asked to participate in the selection of candidates for the AAMC’s
Senior and Junior Faculty Development seminars, and other programs where
the institution has the option of sending a representative, such as
ELAM. The AAMC expects that the WLO will assure that her institution
will have or develop a mentoring program for women. She is also
responsible for responding to media requests and inquiries in
conjunction with the public affairs office, serves as a liaison with
other professional women’s groups and as a speaker on WIM issues,
promotes recruitment of women faculty and represents the institution on
local, state and national committees involving women’s concerns.
The WLO receives
all AAMC publications, with the responsibility to divulge the
information to the women at her institution (hence our WIM resource
center has all those materials for everyone’s perusal).
The AAMC WIM
section has a website: http://www.aamc.org/members/wim/
where information of interest to all can be shared. |
