INTRODUCTION
In response to societal need, faculty interest, and most recently the
goals and objectives of “Healthy People 2010”, several research projects
have been generated in the area of health disparities and the delivery
of health care at Creighton University School of Medicine (CUSOM). For
example, we have recently established a Research in Minority Health
program funded by Tobacco Settlement Funds which will greatly facilitate
and enhance faculty research in the health disparities area. In
addition, we have a well-established Medical Student Research Program
which will be a vehicle for student research in the area of health
issues affecting under-represented minority (URM) groups.
Since achievement in scholarship/research is a requirement for tenure
and advancement in rank for faculty at CUSOM, we are conscious of the
need to provide “protected time”, adequate space, and start-up funds for
junior faculty. This ensures URM and other faculty will have the
resources for a successful career start. However, sustaining funds for
research have to be provided from grants and contracts while faculty
mentoring and development will be provided by the COE-grant to ensure
that extra-mural funding is successfully attained.
