Mission Statement

Married to Medicine is a Creighton University student organization aimed at strengthening marriages, families, and homes. As a Creighton University organization, Married to Medicine members will be guided by the Creighton University and the Creighton University School of Medicine mission statements.

One of the four core values of Creighton University listed in the university mission statement is the "importance of family life." Married to Medicine recognizes that the family is the basic unit of society with fundamental influence on society and individuals. This organization strives to strengthen families by providing activities that give students who have marriage and/or parental responsibilities an opportunity to socialize in a family-friendly atmosphere, as well as improve family management skills in areas such as time management, financial planning, and communication.

 

Constitution

ARTICLE I - NAME

The name of this organization shall be “Married to Medicine” (M2M), hereafter referred to as the Organization.

ARTICLE II-PURPOSE

This organization aims to provide wholesome family-oriented activities designed to:

  • Provide an organized venue for students, their significant others, and their children to develop relationships with other couples, parents, and children
  • Help families discover ways to make tight budgets stretch further
  • Assist families new to Omaha in making a smooth and happy transition to Omaha and medical school
  • Develop a social and personal preparedness support network for students, their significant others, and their children
  • Promote unity and morality in the home

ARTICLE III-MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. Regular membership in this organization shall be open to any full-time Creighton University student who subscribes to the ideals of the organization and pays his/her dues.

Section 2. Associate membership in this organization shall be open to any full-time, part-time student, faculty member, staff member or administrator at Creighton University who subscribes to the ideals of the organization and pays his/her dues.

Section 3. Community memberships in this organization shall be open to any spouse, fiancé, or significant other who is sponsored by a regular member in this organization. Community members must also subscribe to the ideas of the organization. Community members do not need to pay dues, whereas their sponsoring member already paid dues.

Section 4. Membership can be revoked by a majority vote of the organization's officers, after a case justifying such action is presented to and discussed by the organization's officers.

Section 5. The President must be a full-time Creighton University student. Other officers may be regular, associate, or community members.

Section 6. As the name of the organization implies, members understand that this organization is geared towards Creighton Medical Students and their families.

ARTICLE IV-OFFICERS

Section 1. Officers of the organization shall be as follows:

  1. President
  2. Vice-president
  3. Playgroup Director
  4. Treasurer
  5. Communications Specialist

Section 2. Election of Officers: Officers of the organization shall be elected in April for the proceeding school year by a majority vote or a quorum of the organization -as defined in Article V, Section 2.

Section 3. Officers shall take office during April and shall serve for a period of one year.

Section 4. Officers shall not be on academic or disciplinary probation at the time of their elections and throughout their terms in the office. Officers must posses a 2.5 GPA and maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA to serve during their tenure.

Section 5. Officers may be impeached by a 2/3 majority vote of officially registered members.

Section 6. In case of vacancy of an office, the remaining officers may appoint another member to fill the vacancy, or a remaining officer may fill the duties of the vacant office.

Section 7. The President and at least one other officer must be a student at Creighton University. Other offices may be filled by an associate member of this organization.

Section 8. Duties of Officers:

1. President- Shall preside over all meetings, conduct all meetings, conduct all official organization business and may cosign checks. The President reserves the right to appoint all committee chairpersons with the approval of 2/3 of the voting members present. The President may participate in, or oversee special committees.

2. Vice President- Shall, in the absence of or when delegated by the President, preside over meetings and conduct official organization business. He/she may also cosign checks. The VP may participate in, or oversee special committees.

3. Playgroup Director – Shall coordinate weekly playgroup activities for the parents and children of students.

4. Treasurer - He/she shall be responsible for keeping accurate records of all financial matters, collecting dues and cosigning all checks with another executive officer or the organization's moderator.

5. Communications Specialist – Shall assist in the preparation and distribution of communications, as well as, oversee marketing, recruiting, and web development efforts. Shall keep official records and history for the organization.

ARTICLE V-MEETINGS

Section 1. A regularly scheduled activity shall be held at least once a month

Section 2. A quorum shall consist of 30% of the members.

Section 3. A quorum shall be present in order for any official business to be conducted. Official business shall include election of officers, setting of dues, and any other major decisions effecting the organization.

ARTICLE VI-COMMITTEES

The officers of the organization shall have the authority to create any standing or special committees that will further the purpose of the organization (e.g., publicity, social, fundraising).

ARTICLE VII-FINANCES

Section 1. Dues shall be determined by the officers of the organization subject to the approval of a majority vote at a meeting of the organization.

Section 2. If the organization dissolves, all funds granted by Creighton Students Union will be returned to CSU. The remaining funds will be given to the Medical School scholarship committee to give to a medical student who is married or a parent who has demonstrated a well-balanced approach to being successful in academics, service, and family life.

ARTICLE VIII-PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY

The parliamentary authority shall be current edition of Robert's Rules of Order, Newly Revised.

ARTICLE IX-AMENDMENTS

Section 1. Amendments must be approved by the majority of the officers.

Section 2. Amendments become effective only after approval by the Student Activities Office.
