United Way of the Midlands - Basic & Material Needs
From 1997 to 2001, the average number of homeless in metro shelters rose from 676 people per month, to 916 per month. When broken down, the number of men, women, children and physically disabled individuals needing shelter rose during that period. The only category of individuals whose shelter use dropped was "veterans." Of the shelters using the OASIS database to compile information, the Profile sources note that 48.3 percent of the "heads of household" in homeless families have either a full-time or part-time job.
