Ryan Finlayson graduated from California State University Hayward with a degree in Biological Sciences, and has worked in the medical field for almost 10 years. In 1994 Ryan enlisted in the US Army and served 4 years active duty as a combat medical specialist in a mechanized infantry battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. After completing his active duty enlistment, Ryan served 4 years in the California Army National Guard, working as a medic for a special detachment of the state surgeon’s office, he helped organize and perform medical readiness operations for the state. During his military service he found that he enjoyed teaching, and volunteered to become a CPR and First Aid instructor for his unit. He also earned the Expert Field Medical Badge, 2 Army Commendation Medals and several minor awards for excellence. While serving in the National Guard and finishing his degree at Cal. State Hayward, Ryan worked 2 years as an EMT and 4 years as a Paramedic for American Medical Response, in Alameda County, California. To maintain his instructor skills, he taught CPR and ACLS at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco for 3 years. Ryan has participated in research at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and at California State University, Hayward, but because of his experiences on the ambulance in Oakland, his primary interests are still in emergency medicine, because of the 'variety of patients and the potential for immediate results it provides'. Ryan chose Creighton University School of Medicine because of the friendly and enthusiastic environment he found on his interview day, and because it gave him the opportunity to return to his home state of Nebraska. Ryan’s fiancée is also an M1 at CU SOM, and he says that 'We were unable to find another school which was as welcoming and supportive as Creighton has been, we are both really happy to be Creighton.'
