The AMA has a medical student section (MSS), a resident section and a practicing physician section. The AMA is the strongest and largest medical society in the nation. Our initiatives, including the reduction of resident work hours and a focus on the elimination medical school debt have had a national impact.
At the local level we are funded by the state and metro medical societies. If you join AMA you will have the opportunity to work on policy issues with attending physicians in committees. This is especially important for those seeking competitive residencies. A good knowledge of medical issues and a strong relationship with attendings will further enhance your CV.
We offer the opportunity for mentorship by area physicians in the specialty of your choice. This will afford you the opportunity to get a first hand look at the field and gain valuable advice on getting a residency while following a physician around.
The AMA holds monthly meetings with selected speakers. Lunch is complimentary for our members.
Our national community service project is titled Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care. Too many Americans are without access to health care and this project is an initiative to help address the issue of access to care.
