Cardiology is one of the largest divisions within the Department. The Division provides physician evaluation and management of patients with complex cardiovascular diseases through its JCAHO accredited, freestanding facility across the street from Saint Joseph Hospital. Outpatient services include electrocardiography, x-ray, exercise testing, echocardiography including transesophageal (TEE), carotid and peripheral vascular (including abdominal and renal) ultrasound, holter and event recorder monitoring, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, implantable defibrillator (ICD) and pacemaker management, tilt table testing, cardiac catheterization, therapeutic monitoring (anticoagulation and amiodarone) and congestive heart failure clinics, cardiovascular rehabilitation, nutrition education, stress management, smoking cessation, and risk reduction. The Cardiac Center at Columbus, NE is beginning its third year of operation. A faculty cardiologist lives in this rural community of 20,000. Another satellite clinic is also located at Bergan Mercy Medical Center. At Saint Joseph Hospital the faculty provide state-of-the-art inpatient cardiovascular care that includes arrhythmia monitoring, echocardiographic, electrocardiography, exercise testing, cardiac catheterization and intervention, and electrophysiology services. Outreach activities are also a major portion of the division's practice. The faculty staff 16 outreach clinics for a total of 84 physician days each month. The Division of Cardiology also has a three year fellowship program. Resident Involvement: Residents in the first and second years are actively involved in the inpatient care of acutely ill cardiac patients. The cardiology inpatients are divided into three teams that are comprised of a faculty member, a cardiology fellow, two to three internal medicine residents and two to four medical students. These teams follow the patients throughout their stay in the hospital and arrange for outpatient follow-up. In addition, cardiology provides specific skill training sessions in auscultation, echocardiographic interpretation and exercise testing. |
