Biographical Sketch

Eugene C. Rich, M.D., FACP

Dr. Rich received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1977. He subsequently undertook residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in general internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis, Minnesota, completing his training in 1982. He served as faculty member in the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and School of Public Health until 1989 when he became Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. In April 1996, he assumed the role of Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. He is also Director of the Center for Practice Improvement and Outcomes Research at Creighton University Medical Center, and was inaugurated as the Tenet Healthcare Endowed Chair at Creighton in 1998. In addition, he is Medical Director of UniNet (a managed health care network of five hospitals and over 850 physicians in the Omaha Metropolitan area).

Throughout his career, Dr. Rich has been very active in research, academic administration, and public policy concerning medical education and primary care. His research explores the influence of the practice environment on health professional decision-making with a particular focus on practice variation in primary medical care. He is the author of over 85 publications in this area. He is a frequent consultant to federal agencies, foundations, and managed care organizations and serves as Editorial Review Group Chair in health care administration and health policy for Doody Publishing. He is a member of the Board of the National Fund for Medical Education, and a member of the Step III Committee for the National Board of Medical Examiners. He holds leadership roles in such national organizations as the Association of Professors of Medicine, The Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Primary Care Fellowship Society.
