Creighton University, founded in 1878, is a private, co-ed, independent, Jesuit institution. The University has an enrollment of 6,300 students. Undergraduate and graduate studies are offered in 40 major disciplines and at independent schools of business administration, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing. Creighton is consistently ranked in the top 10 regional universities in the U.S. News and World Reports annual survey of American colleges and universities. This ranking is based upon reputation among college administrators in addition to other factors such as selectivity, financial support and student satisfaction. Creighton University occupies an 80 acre campus just a short drive from downtown Omaha. This includes a two acre fitness center that has an Olympic sized swimming pool, racquetball, tennis and basketball courts, gymnastics area, saunas and weight training equipment. There are three libraries with nearly one million books, periodicals, and audiovisual information sources. Creighton University's School of Medicine is one of the oldest university medical schools west of the Mississippi. The mission of the medical school is to develop and promote an understanding of human health and the causes, treatment and prevention of disease. Education of the medical students is an integral part of the internal medicine residency program.
