"A big reason why the residents are so happy with this program is that the faculty never forget that you have a life outside of medicine."

Our program has long recognized that without time away from patient care activities a resident can easily become burned out and discouraged. We are happy to report that we have achieved an extremely well-balanced resident and family friendly program without compromising education. Some examples of things we have done to achieve this goal are listed below.

  1. Each resident is guaranteed a minimum of four days off per month with at least one full weekend guaranteed.
  2. We have a night float system to minimize in-house call at Saint Joseph Hospital.
  3. Most residents are able to complete their work within an 80 hour maximum time period each week.
  4. Sick leave of up to 30 days per year.
  5. A very generous four weeks of paid vacation per year that can be taken one week at a time during any rotation.
  6. Maternity Leave of up to six weeks off for a normal delivery, and eight weeks off for a cesarean delivery.
  7. Paternity leave of up to two weeks, given as a combination of sick leave and vacation.
  8. No in-house call for third year residents.
