Eugene Rich, MD and Robert Dunlay, M.D.

Welcome from the Internal Medicine Chair and Program Director

We are pleased that you are considering the opportunity to continue your education in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Creighton University School of Medicine. The medicine programs that are available for you include (1) a three-year categorical Internal Medicine residency, (2) a one-year preliminary residency for those who may be going into other areas of specialty training, and (3) a four-year Medicine/Pediatrics Program. The medicine residency is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Creighton University School of Medicine is one of the oldest university-based medical schools established west of the Mississippi and the Internal Medicine residency has been one of its outstanding educational programs. Site visitors from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) have consistently commented on both the quality of the training program and on the residents' satisfaction with their educational experience. Clearly, one of the outstanding characteristics of this program is the collegial relationship between the faculty and residents and the degree of faculty commitment and involvement in the day-to-day education of our residents. Currently, about 75% of the categorical and the medicine/pediatrics residents elect to practice primary care medicine, while those who wish to continue in subspecialty training have consistently been accepted into first-choice programs, including the subspecialty medicine programs offered at Creighton University School of Medicine.

Inpatient training and continuity outpatient clinics are provided at Saint Joseph Hospital at Creighton University Medical Center, the Omaha VA Medical Center, and several private community hospitals. Community ambulatory sites are utilized for block rotations in north and west Omaha. A "night float" system has been established at Creighton University Medical Center so that first-year residents are not required to be in the hospital for more than 12 hours each day. The residents' benefit package includes excellent healthcare and malpractice coverage, life and disability insurance, stipends which are above the national mean, and four weeks of paid vacation. Educational leave and travel stipends are also available for senior medicine residents.

Metropolitan Omaha has a population of about one million people. It is a city with superb public schools, relatively low crime and a strong economy. Omaha is the home of two medical schools, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and several community colleges. It is also a Midwest center of arts and sciences. Few can escape the excitement of college football in the fall, Creighton basketball in the winter, and the College World Series which is hosted in Omaha in the spring. In short, Omaha is a great place to live whether you are single or with family.

We are extremely proud of our medicine residents and our faculty and we hope that you will seriously consider the advantages of training in this program where medical education, ethics, and concern for the individual are paramount.

Sincerely yours,

Eugene Rich, MD
