"Of all the Preliminary Programs I interviewed with, this is the only one where Preliminary and Categorical residents are treated equally."

Mark Eggleston, MD
Creighton University
Omaha, NE

1. Preliminary Program: (NRMP Number 137215)
This year-long program is available to physicians wishing to enter other fields, such as anesthesiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, radiology and physical rehabilitation which recommend one year of training prior to specialty training. The purpose of this year is to expose residents to a broad spectrum of general medicine. The program for the year is similar to that of the categorical PGY-I residents, as described below.

2. Categorical Program: (NRMP Number 137216)
The goal of the categorical program is to educate physicians in the arts, sciences and skills of internal medicine. Completion of the three year training program prepares residents for the American Board of Internal Medicine certification examination with options for practice as a specialist in internal medicine or for additional training in one of the subspecialties of internal medicine. The quality of our graduates is attested to by their performance on the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam with average scores consistently above the national mean.

"The Program is excellent because compared to a lot of other programs, it provides equally strong development in both medicine and pediatrics."

Jennifer Guss, MD
George Washington University
Washington DC

3. Medicine/Pediatrics Program: (NRMP Number 137230)
The Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency program at Creighton University and University of Nebraska Medical Center took its first class in 1986. Since that time, we have produced a steady stream of primary care providers trained and certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. Over 50% of our graduates have gone into primary care, many within our Midwestern region.

The program is a four year experience with combined training in both internal medicine and pediatrics. In order to obtain adequate seasonal exposure to illness, the training periods vary from year to year. Residents alternate between internal medicine and pediatrics every four months. Twenty-four months of training in each specialty is provided. Beginning in July, 1997 the program has begun an expansion, from two incoming residents per year to four. The internal medicine portion of the program is directly through Creighton University and affiliated hospitals and clinics. The pediatrics training program is through a combined pediatrics residency with both Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Theresa Townley has been the Program Director since November 2003. She is a faculty member in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
