Mayo
Clinic Minority Medical Student Career Development Programs
Greetings!
Creighton
University School of Medicine distinguishes itself as a leading academic
institution with a strong commitment to diversity. Mayo Clinic shares that
commitment to diversity.
To
address the number of minorities progressing into clinical research and academic
medicine, Mayo Clinic has developed several integrated programs to provide
minority students an added edge. The goals of the programs are to provide
medical students early exposure to clinical care experiences, an introduction to
basic science/patient-oriented research, and opportunities to participate in
career development workshops. To ensure these programs are accessible to
all students, travel expenses, meals, and housing are covered or a
generous living stipend is made available (depending on the program).
The
2007 Mayo Clinic Minority Career Development Programs are opportunities that I
am certain you will want to share with students at Creighton University School
of Medicine. To directly access program information and our on-line
applications, please direct students to: http://www.mayo.edu/msgme/diversity.html
. A detailed description of each program is also listed below. Please
forward these opportunities to diverse medical students at your institution.
We
look forward to continuing our collaboration and affording diverse groups of
students these unique opportunities.
Respectfully,
Laurie
B. Gavilo-Lane

The
one-week Career Development Program is designed to give medical students from
minority populations the opportunity to visit Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN,
Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ or Jacksonville, FL) in order to gain an in-depth look at
training and career opportunities. The Career Development Program
provides students with a jump start on critical career pathway decisions they
will soon have to make through a series of clinical rotation experiences,
workshops, discussions and interactions with Mayo clinicians. At the same
time, students are introduced to medical care and residency training at another
premier institution.

The
eight-week Research Fellowship matches students with Mayo Clinic investigators
based on their interests. For many years the specific and unique health
needs of minority populations in the U.S. have been inadequately studied.
One reason for this is the extreme shortage of clinical investigators from
minority groups. Although progress has been made toward increasing the
number of minority clinicians, little, if any, increase in the number of
clinical investigators has occurred. Mayo Clinic offers a comprehensive
training program for patient-oriented research. In addition to their
research project, students attend a series of seminars and presentations that
introduce them to clinical research methods.

4th yr medical
students
The
fourth year Visiting Medical Student Clerkship affords students a four-week
rotation at one of the Mayo Clinic's three locations. Visiting medical
students become an active member of a multidisciplinary health care team. In
addition, students attend teaching rounds, conferences, take patient histories,
perform physical examinations, and assist with operating room and other
procedures. To ensure this program is accessible to a diverse group of
applicants, there are multiple scholarship opportunities available to students,
including a $1,000 diversity scholarship.
