David C. Leach, M.D., will speak about humanism and the art of medicine in residency training programs at a lecture from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday October 5, 2005, at Boys Town National Research Hospital Auditorium, next to Creighton University Medical Center hospital, 601 N. 30th Street. Dr. Leach’s lecture, "The Formation of Physicians: Competence and Character," is part of the Gold Humanism Honor Society Visiting Lecture series at Creighton University. The event is free and open to the public. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m.

Dr. Leach is executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He has been instrumental in establishing and ensuring that humanism and professionalism competencies are included in residency programs across the country. He has previously served as director of medical education at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. He was awarded the "Good Samaritan Award" by Governor John Engler for his work over 25 years at a free clinic in Detroit.

The Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) recognizes senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and others for demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. The goal of the GHHS is for its members to become guardians of and advocates for humanism in medicine in teaching and practice
